The internet Vs. practicality.
Don’t believe everything the internet tells you.
When it comes to Emergency preparedness and survival there are so many sources that we’d get dizzy just finding the right ones. But then again what are the right sources? The best advice I can give you here is that online credentials are as abundant as they are real. Here are some of my suggestions to help you better navigate the sea of internet “experts” out there.
- Look up multiple sources. Don’t stick to only one blogger or YouTube channel. Look at multiple sources on the same topic, as broad or specific as it might be. You might pick up different bits of information or the delivery style of one might make things clearer to your process.
- Reality check. Is the information I am getting from these sources something that is attainable and doable now or in the near future? Some videos might show really cool skills, but it will all be for naught if you have not reached the level of proficiency necessary to execute them.
- Try it. Once you have found a source that seems to be teaching the things you want to learn, get out and try them. This is where the real learning process happens in my opinion. You will learn if these skills are effective and adequate to you and your plans and goals. There is many ways to do the same thing. but not all ways will work for you. By trying out the skills you find worthy of learning you learn better about you and your abilities. Don’t get over your head with it though, especially when it comes to safety.
- High production value is not always better. I find that many sources nowadays are split into two main categories, entertainment and education. It is ok to have both, but what is it that you want to get out of what you are watching and reading?
- Gear!!! Don’t get sucked into buying the gear that the hottest new youtuber is pitching you. It might be great and worth buying, but it should not drive your abilities and skills. Just how there are many ways to do something, there are many bits of gear that will do the same thing, and what might work for your favorite online survivalist might not work for you.
I hope this helps a little. The best thing to do is to get out there and try.
